ARTIST TALK WITH DOUG LEWIS
FRIDAY 8 APRIL AT 12:30 PM

"On Looking is a work that elaborates on the compulsion of looking. It is a
kind of reading of the street, detailing moments/shadows, street level
interactions and most apparently, simple architectures of space.

As an approach, I prefer to rely on the symptoms of flanerie and therefore
while working, go to great lengths to have nothing overly definite in mind.
I believe that the act of seeing differs from the act of looking. The act of
seeing, if you are fortunate, occurs when you open your eyes. The act of
looking however, has more to do with physically 'engaging' your
surroundings. Somehow while walking and looking, we become acutely aware of
ourselves while synonymously, the 'other' becomes more ambiguous."

Doug Lewis is a Winnipeg based artist and emerging curator. He received his
BFA (Honours) in 1992 from the University of Manitoba. Lewis works in
several mediums that span photography, video, audio, drawings and sculptural
installation. Past selected solo shows include the Plug IN ICA and the
Mendel Art Gallery; group selected shows include The Power Plant (Toronto),
Dade College Art Gallery (Miami, Florida), The Confederation Centre
(P.E.I.), Art Gallery of Hamilton.

« Dans On Looking, je sonde la pulsion du regard. C’est une façon de lire la
rue, qui détaille les instants et les ombres, les interactions au niveau de
la rue et, en apparence, les architectures simples de l’espace.

Comme démarche, j’adopte les symptômes de la flânerie. Ainsi, quand je
travaille, je m’efforce de faire le vide dans mon esprit. À mon avis, voir
et regarder sont deux choses. Si l’on est chanceux, voir se produit quand on
ouvre les yeux. Regarder, toutefois, relève davantage d’un corps à corps
avec le milieu immédiat. On ne sait trop comment, mais en marchant et en
regardant, on devient extrêmement conscient de soi-même, alors qu’autrui
devient, par équivalence, plus ambigu. »

Doug Lewis est un artiste et un conservateur de la relève qui travaille à
Winnipeg. Il a obtenu son B.A. en arts visuels de l’Université du Manitoba
en 1992. Lewis œuvre en plusieurs domaines, dont la photographie, la vidéo,
l’audio, le dessin et l’installation sculpturale. Il a présenté des
expositions solos, entre autres, à Plug IN ICA et à la Mendel Art Gallery,
et il a participé à des expositions collectives à The Power Plant (Toronto),
au Dade College Art Gallery (Miami, Floride), au Centre de la Confédération
(Î.-P.-É.) et à l’Art Gallery of Hamilton.
