SECONDHAND NURSERY RHYMES

September 14 - 27, 2017

Reception:
Thursday September 14, 2017 5 - 8 pm

Galerie St-Laurent + Hill is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Ottawa based artist Tim desClouds.

Statement:

"My process involves both experimentation and inner search. I have been interested in both painting as an art and as a means of investigating the self and its relationship to the outer world. The work has evolved from found objects, images, and memories that have been gathered along the many paths my life has followed. Revived, these things have blossomed into sculptures, constructions and paintings that interpret the rather magical life I share with my daughter, wife, extended family and friends. The works try to transform everyday acquaintances, events and social narratives into whimsical constructions that express universal themes ranging from family trials and tribulations to personal experiences, joys, evils, and disappointments.

Recently, I have worked a new iconography into my pieces. By referencing cultural histories and stories from art history, I have been able to add yet another layer of ideas and symbolism to my art work. As a lifelong student and scholar of art history, this adds an exciting new element to both the art process and final product. I am interested in the forward arrow of time and I have a deep interest in the influence of art history as it follows this arrow. These two things have created the new iconography within my work. I am very conscious of my placement within my environment, our cultural history, and the traditions of past regional artists. I access this sense of place and time by reflecting the many layers of life in the Ottawa Valley through whimsy and flights of imagination. The work tries to push traditions and concerns forward in a fresh and innovative manner.

The works are materializations of my everyday life and they help weave a landscape of our shared existence. I imagine the space of the work as a cultural home where the viewer may stop in and then depart enlightened.
